The Change Makers & The Winning Streak
Writers pushing the boundaries of the form
Salons & Talks
In 2019, Word Factory is focussing on The Change Makers, an exclusive programme of salons and discussions with writers pushing the boundaries of the short story form, commissioned exclusively by Word Factory in partnership with Arts Council England to share new work and inspiration.
And our spring/summer masterclasses will focus on The Winning Streak, bringing you closer to recipients of some of the most important literary prizes in the UK, with a range of workshops and opportunities for you to share your work.
We have also launched our own exclusive limited edition imprint showcasing some of the best UK short story writing talent, The Guillemot Factory, with Guillemot Press (winners of the prestigious Michael Marks Award), and will be showcasing new talent in beautifully produced pamphlets. Our commitment to supporting new talent is also backed this year by partners in our renowned mentoring award, the Word Factory Apprentice Award: Arts Council England, New Writing North, Comma Press, Writing West Midlands and Literature Works.

Short Story Summer Course – Workshop #2
‘Voice’ is one of the most mysterious aspects of fiction to master. But what is it? How do you develop it? Do some people find it more easily than others – and if so why? This masterclass will enable you to experiment with aspects of style including point of view, tenses and structure, allowing you to keep your work fresh, hone your authorial voice and create unforgettable characters who have minds of their own.

Short Story Summer Course – Workshop #4
A workshop for us all to explore where the body fits in our work, how to welcome our own bodies more into our writing, and embrace writing as a physical practice. Wear comfortable clothing, be prepared to move (to the extent you are able) as well as write — let’s play together and on the page and see where that takes us.
