A bright, bold, exclusive summer course of four workshops for committed writers with award-winning writers sharing both their work and their winning ideas.

Designed by writer and Word Factory director Cathy Galvin, founder of the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award and a judge of leading literary prizes, this course will prepare you for the motivation, discipline and practicality of refining your work and getting it published. You will also be offered a chance to read your work at a special summer event later in the year attended by literary agents.

Class sizes will be kept to 25 maximum.

To make the most of the course, be prepared to do some background reading and undertake writing tasks at and between the sessions. There will be spaces for you to discuss your work with other attendees after sessions in our Breathing Spaces group, led by Linda Quinn. And make sure not to lose out on booking your place at a variety of salons with your tutors during the season.

Short Story Course – Workshop #5

Taking Your Feelings For A Walk with Tom Lee
This workshop is focussed on helping you tune into your writing and to encourage your inner voice. Tom will explain how he's been able to talk his own feelings for a walk through the short story form, reference to other writers and time for exercises and discussion.

Forgotten Women Workshop - Flashback Fiction Showcase
In this fun, interactive workshop, exploring the lost voices of women from history, you will learn how to write and perform convincing historical flash fiction, using objects and a range of prompts to inspire new stories. With Emily Devane, Cathy Galvin and Sharon Eckman.

Finding your voice with Preti Taneja, winner of the Desmond Elliott Prize 2018
‘Voice’ is one of the most mysterious aspects of fiction to master. But what is it? How do you develop it? Do some people find it more easily than others – and if so why? This masterclass will enable you to experiment with aspects of style including point of view, tenses and structure, allowing you to keep your work fresh, hone your authorial voice and create unforgettable characters who have minds of their own.

Short Story Summer Course – Workshop #3

Writing Convincing Dialogue with Ingrid Persaud: winner of the BBC National Short Story Award
Spend two hours honing this crucial writing skill. Poorly crafted dialogue undermines all your hard work. Beautifully done it can make your work come alive. During this workshop we will explore ways of using dialogue to advance your story’s plot and develop character. We will also work through published examples, different formats and Ingrid will leave you with a few top tips for creating convincing dialogue.

Short Story Summer Course – Workshop #4

The Body and The Word
A workshop for us all to explore where the body fits in our work, how to welcome our own bodies more into our writing, and embrace writing as a physical practice. Wear comfortable clothing, be prepared to move (to the extent you are able) as well as write — let’s play together and on the page and see where that takes us.

INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS: Booking prices vary, depending on the type of class.

Our Flash Fiction Day at Tara Arts Theatre in South West London must be booked direct with them: details and tickets here.

Other classes for this season are charged at £55 each: this includes free admittance to the special July salon — an opportunity to read your own work — for anyone attending two or more sessions in the course.

Class sizes will be kept to 25 maximum.
