An exclusive course of five workshops for committed short story writers with award-winning practitioners, a psychologist and agents aimed at honing writing and presentational skills.
Designed by writer and Word Factory director Cathy Galvin, founder of the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award and a judge of leading literary prizes, this course will prepare you for the motivation, discipline and practicality of refining your work and getting it published.
To make the most of the course, be prepared to do some background reading and undertake writing tasks at and between the sessions. There will be spaces for you to discuss your work with other attendees before and after sessions.

Learning to cope with the inevitable setbacks is an essential part of any writer's life, yet it gets little attention. Resilient Thinking for Writers addresses the subject head-on in an energising and interactive workshop combining presentation, discussion and written exercises.

Short Story Course – Workshop #2
In this three-hour workshop, we will explore practical techniques to apply metaphorical thinking to every aspect of your writing, from descriptions, to character and setting, to plot design.

Short Story Course – Workshop #3
This one-off masterclass will delve into the function and mysteries of place in fiction. Using a range of texts and exercises, Courttia will show that when your character is the vehicle and emotion the fuel, place and setting become the landscape which reveal themes and intentions.

Short Story Course – Workshop #5
This workshop is focussed on helping you tune into your writing and to encourage your inner voice. Tom will explain how he's been able to talk his own feelings for a walk through the short story form, reference to other writers and time for exercises and discussion.

FULL COURSE: All five workshops from September 2018 to March 2019 PLUS admittance to a special July salon to read your work: £240. Members discounted rate: £190. Please note: the fourth session in February is focussed on individual advice sessions with agents and will have to be booked separately on a first-come, first-served basis. There are only 12 Full Course Tickets available, once full, classes will need to be booked on an individual basis.
INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS: £55. Members discounted rate: £40. For the core sessions with Isabel Costello and Voula Grand, Courttia Newland, Adam Marek and Jenn Ashworth.
Class sizes will be kept to 25 maximum.
