June Short Story Club: Tobias Wolff

The Night in QuestionIn June, we’re reading the iconic story, ‘Bullet in the Brain’, by the American author Tobias Wolff. The story is about a bank robbery, and it’s no spoiler to say that a man is shot – what follows are the thoughts that go through his mind as he dies. The story was first published in the 1996 collection The Night in Question, and since then, it has become a classic example of the perfect short story. Wolff himself said in an interview with The Paris Review: “[The story is] about a book critic who is so jaded, and so filled with allusion and literary reference, that even when his very life is threatened, he hears the threat as a series of clichés that he thinks are risible.” There is more…

Submit your story before midnight GMT on Monday 6 June for a chance to read it out loud at the Word Factory salon in London on Wednesday June 29.
