What an unlikeable man we found the protagonist of AL Kennedy’s Touch Positive to be – mostly. While I don’t think there was anyone present who actively liked him, connection with him ran the spectrum from “get a grip” to the rather more forgiving “something must have caused the parlous state he’s in”.

The humour of the piece was far more widely appreciated. Kennedy’s eye for the idiocy, the mundanity of life struck a chord with the group; in particular the way that humour ran counterpoint with the protagonist’s unpleasantness. We asked: in his interactions with people, are we seeing the smiling, accepting face of customer service, or a wary and nervous response to someone visibly damaged? There is more…

In a career spanning thirty years, Stella Duffy has written thirteen novels including her latest, The Purple Shroud. The Room of Lost Things and State of Happiness were both long-listed for the Orange Prize. She has written ten plays and over fifty short stories, including several for BBC Radio 4.
